Playing up single denomination offends others

This is a letter that should appear on the front page of the paper with a huge picture of the First Unitarian Church and several "candid" photos of members. Unfortunately, we're not nearly as huge locally as the Assemblies of God, so it won't happen.

I wonder if the News-Leader realizes how inappropriate and offensive it is to many people when on not only one day, but three, huge front page spreads are given to one particular religious sect (Oct. 12-14 series on mission work abroad). I feel quite sure that the Assemblies of God people are adequately equipped to produce news of their flock to their members, who are certainly the only ones to care.

At the Unitarian church, we wish we could have this type of free publicity. We would never be blustery enough to say we have all of life's answers. We recognize the plain truth that we are human. We do, however, try to ask as many questions as possible.

For those who only know of our church through Prairie Home Companion (which we too laugh at), here is a list of the seven principles of the Unitarian Church:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large. The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

We welcome all people, regardless of race or sexual orientation, to our services at 11 a.m. on Sundays at our church on East Battlefield between Glenstone and Lone Pine. There are also religious education classes at 10 a.m.

I would encourage members of all other religious sects in this area (Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Greek Orthodox, Pagan or whatever) to write about your church or fellowship and allow the local paper to truly have a voice in this community for all people.

Paul Phariss is former music director at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Springfield.
